The regions rate of violent crime declined 25% in the 1990s, while the national rate declined 24%. The rate dropped 23% in Cook County, which had the regions highest violent crime rate at 1,357 per 100,000 residents. McHenry County was the only county to experience an increase, from 101 crimes per 100,000 residents in 1990 to 136 in 1998. Property crime in the region decreased by 20% in the 1990s. Will, McHenry, Lake and DuPage Counties experienced nearly 30% reductions.
Sixteen percent of the regions residents do not feel that their neighborhood is safe for children. This percentage climbed to 30% for residents of the City of Chicago. Ninety-five percent of residents ranked public safety in neighborhoods and workplaces as either very important or their top priority. One in 10 said improving public safety is the single change they would want to improve the regions quality of life.
