This map shows currently protected areas and identifies areas for potential protection. Potential protected areas are based on 1997 satellite imagery and land use categories prepared by the Northeastern Illinois Planning Commission (NIPC) in 1995. Current protected areas were determined from verifications conducted in 1999 by county forest preserves, conservation districts and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. Map prepared for Chicago Wilderness by The Field Museum and Futurity, Inc. and supported by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (grant GP37J) and adapted for Chicago Metropolis 2020 by the University of Illinois at Chicago.
